Catechesis and retreat: two important steps for preparing for Communion

Catechesis is an approach to the religious education of children, young people and adults and generally includes teachings on Christian doctrine. It allows future communicants to:

  • learn about the important events of Jesus' life: teaching in the temple, the sermon on the mount, walking on water or his entrance into Jerusalem, the Resurrection and other key moments in His life.
  • learn how to live in community
  • develop a sense of sharing and charity with Jesus' miracle of the loaves as an example
  • be introduced to mass through prayer practice.

Preparation for Communion lasts for a whole year in which catechism is taught either in the parish church or in a catholic school, depending on the diocese. It is important that future communicants participate regularly in the Sunday mass.

The retreat is a vital, but non compulsory, part of preparing for Communion. Lasting for 2 to 3 days, a retreat is generally spent in a religious centre, place of pilgrimage (Lourdes, Nevers, Lisieux, etc.), or any other place conducive of contemplation. It is an intense time during which young people review what they know about the Gospel. This time of sharing and prayers, interspersed with group activities (religious reading, theatre, music, etc.) enables them to prepare the profession of faith they will later say aloud before parents and friends during the celebration.
