First communion:

First communion is generally taken at ages 8 to 10 and was once known as "private communion". Together with Baptism and Confirmation, it is a eucharistic sacrament.

It is during this initial ceremony that the child takes communion by sharing the bread and wine as symbols of the body and blood of Christ. Communicants attend the ceremony dressed preferably in white, a symbol of the purity of baptism.

In order to receive the sacrament of the first communion, the child must have already received the sacrament of reconciliation and repentance. Children talk with a priest who invites them to pray and discern between good and evil.

The Sacrament of Confirmation

Baptism, the Holy Eucharist and Confirmation make up the "sacraments of Christian initiation". Confirmation is not a compulsory step for a Catholic, rather, it is a personal commitment and the last stage of the sacraments initiated by the baptism ceremony. This celebration generally takes place in a church during Sunday mass although it may also be conducted in a place conducive of contemplation. By laying on his hand, his words and by the unction of holy oil on the communicant's forehead, the priest expresses the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian.

The Profession of faith

As part of the Communion rite, the profession of faith is not a sacrament but a step in the spiritual path of the baptised. It is the renewal of the Christian commitment taken by the parents on the day of Christening.

The ceremonies

These sacraments have become celebrations attended by the immediate family and the god mother and father chosen by the parents to accompany the child throughout its life as a Christian. Guests get together for a meal or refreshment and share the happy moment. Traditionally, images are handed out as souvenirs of this important stage in the life of Catholic children.

This memorable occasion is generally crowned by the giving of a gift to the communicant (a rosary, medal, cross, statue, etc…)

A few prayers for communicants:

  • God loves his children, and because he loves them, he lives amongst them.
  • Jesus refuses nothing to the heart taking him in for the first time.
  • My Lord, how can our hearts hunger for anything else after tasting your blessed feasts?
  • In the Eucharist, Jesus is the gentle friend, the faithful friend, the friend by excellence.
